NEW STUDY BY OHIO STATE PROFESSORS FINDS “MEDICAID IS BROKEN ARGUMENTS” NOT VALID

The Medicaid program is not perfect. It can be better. But, the argument that Medicaid is such a broken system that it is better to be uninsured than to be on Medicaid is not supported by the evidence.

In a new study by William D. Hayes, director of Healthcare Reform for the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and Professor Anand Desai of the John Glenn School of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University, looks at the debate regarding Medicaid expansion. They have found that critics of Medicaid expansion have selectively taken the work of credible scholars with seemingly sound analyses to make the counter intuitive claim that the Medicaid system is so broken that it is better to be uninsured than to have Medicaid coverage.

In their paper, “Medicaid Outcomes: better than being uninsured and comparable to private coverage?” Hayes and Desai conclude that when properly comparing people on Medicaid to people with other sources of health coverage, the general and inevitable conclusion is that having Medicaid coverage is better than being uninsured, including: better access to care, lower rates of unmet health needs; reduced financial burden, less stress; improved mental health status and even reduced rates of death. Medicaid coverage can also be comparable to private coverage on many, though not all, measures. They further find Ohio’s Medicaid program performs better than that in most states and has results on some measures that are similar to or better than private pay in Ohio and better than the national private pay and the national state Medicaid average.

For more information on the study please contact William D. Hayes, Director, Healthcare Reform for the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, 614.736.0102, william.hayes@osumc.edu

Whatever Happened To The Economy?

Professor Jason Seligman is part of a National Public Radio story by Alan Greenblatt called “Whatever Happened To The Economy?” Jobs and the economy dominated political discussion during the election year, but have since been forgotten. Even before the current outbreak of scandals, it was clear Washington preferred to talk about other issues.

Each year the John Glenn School of Public Affairs Learning Community and the John Glenn Civic Leadership Council hold dinner to celebrate another successful school year and to honor outstanding participants in the program.

The John Glenn Civic Leadership Council is the school’s undergraduate student organization. The CLC seeks to promote, broaden, and cultivate civic engagement and leadership among college students and focuses on four distinct areas: policy, academics, service and community.

The John Glenn Learning Community is a co-curricular program sponsored by the Ohio State University’s John Glenn School of Public Affairs and Office of University Housing. The Learning Community allows first-year students with an interest in public service and policy to live together in the residence halls. As an undergraduate student, you will spend an average of only 15-20 hours a week in the classroom. It is important that where you live and spend the balance of your time is a friendly and supportive environment, both academically and socially.

About

The John Glenn School of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University was founded on the principle that an informed and involved citizenry is essential for democracy to thrive. The Glenn School’s programs equip students with the skills to become tomorrow’s citizen-leaders or public service professionals. The skills taught at the Glenn School give them the knowledge necessary for civic engagement and to make a lasting change to their communities and the nation.

“Inspire citizenship and develop leadership” is the mission of the Glenn School. It achieves this goal by preparing professionals for public service, challenging our students and the general public to be more involved in and have a greater knowledge of the civic life of their communities and by providing applied research that directly benefits the citizens of Ohio and the nation.
